However, in most cases the legality of the internet depends on state law.<\/p>\n
The federal government has largely backed state laws in enforcing these laws. However, in a recent case the American Banker reported that a number of illegal Internet gambling transactions were conducted.<\/p>\n
In addition to state laws, the United States has criminal statutes related to unlawful internet gambling. These include the Travel Act, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, and the Interstate Commerce Clause.<\/p>\n
Research has also been conducted to explore the connection between Internet gambling and problems. One study found that the rates of drug use, alcohol consumption, and self-harm were higher among Internet problem gamblers than among non-problem gamblers.<\/p>\n
However, this does not mean that all Internet problem gamblers have these problems. In fact, many Internet gamblers report that their problems have existed before they began playing online. Nevertheless, the connection between gambling and problem behavior appears to be weak.<\/p>\n
